The Sands Hotel was built in 1972, and can account for some very colourful history. Back in the day (before Council crackdowns, resident complaints and drink-driving laws), the Sands Hotel was a live music venue with a fair amount of notoriety. We had a 2am license, and would crank out the rock-n-roll to the singlet-wearing, stubby-cooler-holding masses. Hoodoo Guru’s played here. As did Midnight Oil & Cold Chisel. There were drunken brawls and arguments over the pool table and ashtrays full of cigarettes. Our walls were a sickening shade of yellow, with port-hole windows and fish nets hanging from the ceiling full of faded plastic starfish and rusty hooks. We even had an aquarium. It was a pretty classy joint, all told.
Maroubra has changed a lot in the intervening years. Tooths became Tooheys and Franklins became a Woollies. Our old drive-through Bottle-O that sold cases of beer and casks of wine started selling ‘weird’ stuff like Sangiovese and Pinot Gris . We stopped selling cigarettes.
Then a whole bunch of new folks moved into the area. By the 2016 Census, people in Maroubra were most likely to be between 20 and 40. They mostly held a professional job in healthcare, education, construction or tech services. They mostly had kids.
So we decided to change too. Our new Southend Hotel is made for New Maroubra. A big horseshoe shaped bar to sit at and be social. A huge TAB with wall-to-wall video screens showing every sport you can imagine. A family room where you can paint, play, relax, read or be entertained in a safe, contained space. A function space with it’s own bar to host your next shindig. A bistro serving up good hearty pub grub at family-friendly prices. Kids meals that aren’t all fried and yellow-coloured. It’s all here at Southend (named for the Southern most break at Maroubra Beach).
We hope you love it.
